FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday 16 November 2022
Treoir welcomes the publication today of the Department of Justice’s report from the Child Maintenance Review Group chaired by Justice Catherine Murphy. The report outlines the extensive work done by Justice Murphy and the review group.
“This important publication will require careful consideration but Treoir is pleased to see that the majority of the group is recommending the establishment of an independent State agency to deal with child maintenance and that maintenance should not be counted as means when seeking certain social protection payments.” Damien Peelo, CEO of Treoir stated.
“These two important measures align with Treoir’s submission to the Review Group and will be significant in alleviating child poverty and supporting shared parenting.”
“We will have to study the report more carefully but we are delighted to see that the review group appears to have considered our recommendations. Maintenance is one of those issues that cause so much stress for many parents and we deal with thousands of calls from both mothers and fathers where maintenance is causing conflict. We look forward to working with the government and other stakeholders on the next stages of this report.”
